ATELIER NORD — The studio, Copenhagen · Paris
EIGHTPEOPLE.ONE LINE.
The studio has no style. It has a discipline.
The studio fits in two rooms, in Copenhagen and in Paris. No departments, no hierarchy for show: eight people around the same tables, and drawings passed from hand to hand until they fall silent.
The method
Three movements. Always in this order.
Listen
The place first, the client next, the program last. We spend days on the site before drawing anything — a project begins with what the ground refuses.
Subtract
Every week, the project must lose something. A wall, a door, an intention. What survives months of removal deserves to be built.
Build
The site is the last drawing room. We correct there in chalk, at full scale, down to the last door handle.
The disciplines
Crafts, not signatures.
The studio publishes no names. The work is signed NORD, or it is not signed.
- ARCHITECTUREthree people
The line, the proportion, the restraint.
- STRUCTUREtwo people
What carries must be able to show itself.
- LIGHTtwo people
Ornament will come from it, or it will not come.
- MATERIALone person
Chosen at the quarry, the sawmill, the kiln.
The refusals
What the studio declines.
- 01Competitions — drawing to convince is not drawing.
- 02Towers — beyond four storeys, one no longer assembles a place, one stacks.
- 03Emergency deadlines — slowness is not negotiable, it is the method.
- 04Renderings — a proportion is proven in line, not in pixels.
- 05Extensions without reason — adding is not our trade.
The works
THE RESTIS INthe works.
Five projects, one decade, no images — the buildings told the way we drew them: by what was removed.
